International Antarctic Day (Antarctica Day) – Celebrating 63 years since the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on 1 December 1959

Since 2010, the international polar community annually celebrates Antarctica Day on December 1 to celebrate the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on December 1, 1959, considered one of the most successful achievements of the international community. With its signing, the Antarctic Treaty became the first nuclear weapons agreement (prohibiting military activities of any kind in the Antarctic Region) and the first institution governing all human activities in an international space (a region beyond sovereign jurisdictions).

This year, 2022, SCAR organized two events dedicated to International Antarctica Day.

Taking into account that Romania is present in the treaty as an OBSERVER and that INCDSB has the Department of Arctic and Antarctic Research, the only one in the country, through it, we present to you the film made by SCAR “Our future depends on us: Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment.” The film summarizes the problems arising from global warming and suggests what we should do to reduce them.
